EQUI-VENTURE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE & HORSE RESCUE, Inc.

Our Horse Rescue

This site  The Web

Our mission is to teach horsemanship, not just riding; by striving for excellence in the care and training of the horse, and practicing safety in the proper handling and riding techniques of the horse.  All of this should be done in a way that the horse understands what we are asking of him.  This is accomplished by using the tried and true EQUI-VENTURE standards of DEDICATION, SAFETY, DISCIPLINE, EDUCATION and DETERMINATION.

A good man takes care of his horses and dogs, not only when they are young,

but also when they are old and past service"

-Plutarch

"Here are these exquisite, immensely powerful creatures, who willingly give us their labor in return for our stewardship. They have attended us throughout history, bearing us across frontiers and into battle, pulling our plows, thrilling us in sport, warming us with their beauty. We owe them more than we can ever repay. To send these trusting creatures to  slaughter is beneath their dignity and ours."

-Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit

"In this new century I think it is horrific and slightly strange to realise that horses,
traditionally man's friend, are still being transported and slaughtered for
human consumption in the United States."
  - Sir Paul McCartney

"It’s a lie.  It’s not true. That is not euthanasia. When we take our dogs to get them put down, we’re not taking them to slaughter houses. It’s not euthanasia. It’s blood money."

~ Willie Nelson talking about Horse Slaughter

“All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl.”

WELCOME to our Horse Rescue webpage!   Our facility is licensed as an Animal Shelter with the Carroll County Humane Society.  We raise funds for our horse rescue efforts and facility through other programs that are held at our full service stable. These programs include lessons, stable activities, shows, clinics and clubs to name a few.  We also rely on donations and fundraisers.  Please take a few minutes to review our Facts About Horse Slaughter  and Operating Equi-Venture Horse RescueWe are currently adding links for our Success Stories and In Memory Of webpages are at the bottom of this page.

WHAT WE BELIEVE:

  • We are against the killer auctions and slaughtering of horses and will promote anti-slaughter legislation as well as, the humane treatment of horses (and all animals).
  • Every horse deserves a chance and to be treated with respect and dignity.  We teach our students, staff and volunteers to see things through the horse’s eyes.
  • We do believe in, promote and practice natural horsemanship techniques.  These have been proven to be the best training methods (by far) for horses as this form of training is done by communicating with the horse using a simulation of his language.  The horse understands more quickly what we are asking and then does so out of respect; not out of fear or pain.
  • Education will reduce the number of  at-risk horses.  By creating better horsemen and women; horses will be more understood, be better trained and cared for.  A healthy horse that is well mannered and trained is less likely to end up in the slaughterhouse.
  • The general public, (as well as some of the horse community), is not aware of the unwanted horse problem. We strive to create awareness of what really happens to the unwanted horse and to prevent it from happening in the first place.
  • The horse does not have a voice of it's own.  This is true for all animals and even a lot of human beings.  It is up to caring people to intervene in the abuse or neglect of any living thing.  Sometimes though, neglect is not intentional.  Again, education is a key for the prevention of unintentional neglect.
  • Sometimes if people pull together, we can use resources to help families in need to keep their beloved pets (especially during these hard economic times).  Thus preventing broken hearts and horses from going to auctions as a last resort.

ABOUT OUR STAFF: Equi-Venture is family owned and operated.  RuthAnn is the founder and president of the organization.  Her other immediate family members all play a vital role in it's operation.  They DO NOT receive salaries for their time and they DO NOT receive compensations for their purchases of feed, hay, bedding, farrier serives, vet services, etc.  It fact, they support a lot of the rescue operations with their own personal funds and have done so for over 15 years!

Equi-Venture is also “staffed” by other family members along with committed and caring volunteers.  Without their support, we would not be able to help the large number of horses that we do.  We are always in need of responsible volunteers to help take care of the horses.  We provide free training.  Please consider volunteering!

 SERVICES WE PROVIDE:
  • We are licensed as an Equine Animal Shelter through the Humane Society of Carroll County.

  • During these difficult economic times; we offer a place for horse owners to turn to for help without surrendering their horses. We will try to come up with funding to provide feed & hay for those in need.

  • Not all rescue horses are abused or neglected.  Sometimes owners just can’t afford their horses, or owners are relocated to a place where they can’t take their friends.  We offer a place for owners to surrender their pets.  If we do not have the available space, we network with the horse community and try to find a suitable home.

  • We rehabilitate abused, neglected, ill or sick horses.

  • We have rehoming and adoption programs that allow us to find new devoted and educated owners with permanent homes to place unwanted horses in.

HORSES AND PONIES FOR SALE OR ADOPTION
websitelinkbutton.jpg

  • We train older horses that were never saddle broken and retrain horses for new careers.  We do work on all breeds but, specialize in the OTTB.

  • We work with other rescues to rehome and promote OTTBs (Off The Track Thoroughbreds).  These wonderful animals are ex-racehorses that are no longer used in the sport and are at a very high risk to end up in the slaughter house.

  • We outreach to the public through our lessons, horsemanship programs, courses, e-zines, clubs, stable activities, soical events and fundraisers.

DONATIONS:  We have applied for our 501(c3) Non-Profit status.  This filing may take several months. Until we actually receive the certificate; donations are NOT tax deductible.  We will keep this webpage updated with the proceedings of this filing.
Be sure to check out our Horse Rescue Basic Monthly Needs webpage for information about the areas of  care that are in need of donations.  Feed, hay, bedding, vaccinations, farriery, dental needs, veterinary services, and needed horse equipment and supplies are just some of the items that we need donations for.  We ask everyone to please consider making donations in actual items or to help monetarily.  If you are not in the position to help out monetarily, then please consider volunteering.  We need caring people like you.  Thank you!

SPONSORS:  We are always in need of caring individuals to sponsor our horses.  If 10 people sponsored $20 a month; that would feed one of the rescued animals.  Any regular amount, no matter how small, adds up and can help.

VOLUNTEERS:  We rely on our volunteers to help take care of the horses.  Some duties include:  feeding, watering, stall mucking, grooming, exercising, socialization, fundraising, public relations, advertising, stable maintenance, grounds keeping, and office help.  And that is just some areas we need volunteers to help!  As you can see, if you love horses, there is a way for you to help save a forgotten equine at Equi-Venture Equestrian Centre & Horse Rescue!   Please take a minute to call us.  The horses need people to care and even though they can’t say it; the horses will appreciate it!

WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO TO HELP US SAVE THE HORSES:  If you don't have free money sitting around (and believe me, not a lot people do with the bad economy) there are still many different ways to help.  Perhaps you were not aware of some of these ideas.  Check out the list provided in the link below.  Be creative!  Every dollar helps.  And we truly do appreciate everyone's efforts!
